They Are Not Knick Knacks, They Are Espresso Cups
These little cups may look like something you might purchase in a truck stop on vacation, but these modest containers are scaled small for a purpose.
An average serving of espresso is about one and a half ounces, and that would look less than special in a 8 ounce cup. Since a serving of espresso is little more than a mouthful, people generally order a double. A double espresso is three ounces; not double strength, that is called Ristretto.
Since espresso is doled out in such humble portions, tables in coffee houses are often littered with espresso cups, since the connoisseurs of espresso will often bring books or games to enjoy during their break from the day.
Because of this, coffee houses are a great place to unwind after a hectic day. Espresso is also a great beverage to sit and sip while you are whittling away the hours running from the memories of a day spent working.
Some people are very proud of their collection of cups, and will look for any excuse to have people over, so they may show them off. This means it is rude to make wise about the small cups when someone offers you espresso, because they are most likely very proud of their petite receptacles. Maybe someday you will enjoy serving espresso to your friends, and you will fully understand.
