The One Cup Coffee Maker: The Investment of a Lifetime

July 28, 2005
By Allen Shaw

Not enough time to have your normal "pot" of coffee to get your day going? One-cup coffee makers are the perfect wake-me-up for the late riser. Just turn it on, take your shower, and have a large, steaming cup of coffee waiting.

But which coffee maker should you get? There are plenty of choices. Are you going to be drinking your one cup at home or on the road? Some one-cup coffee makers do not allow for the taller travel mugs. Are you concerned with how the coffee maker will fit in with the décor of your kitchen? There are a number of different designs to fit any style you may have.

But as any caffeine addicted connoisseur will tell you, flavor is the number-one priority when deciding which machine to buy. Research is the best way to start your quest for the perfect cup of coffee. So let's get started.

The top-five one-cup coffee makers are as follows; the Senseo Single-Serve Coffee Machine, the Black and Decker Brew 'N Go, The Melitta MES1R, Keurig B50, and of course Mr. Coffee SSP10 There are good things and bad things about all five. Some are programmable and some are not. Some will accept tall coffee mugs and some only allow those little bitty coffee cups, and that is really annoying for the serious coffee drinker. Some have an automatic shut off, for the forgetful types, and some do not. And some allow the caffeine junkie to set the strength level of each cup of coffee. It just depends on what features you want.

It all depends on what you want. Your humble, but caffeine-addicted host, has the Mr. Coffee one-cup coffee maker. The most important feature to me is ease of use and being able to brew the coffee in the cup I will be using…my travel mug. It was not cheap at $80, but I can turn on the pot, get ready for work, and have my daily dose of wake-me-up on my 30-mile commute to the daily "grind" (pun intended). But you may have other preferences. And no matter what features you want in your one-cup coffee maker, there's a product out there for you.

Capresso C1500
This espresso machine/coffee center is lauded by most users and reviewers alike - and I should hope so with a price tag that usually runs around $600. If you have a passion for coffee, though, this might be just the machine you need, and would probably even work well in a small coffee house.
